Default Why won't it start????

We replaced a failed lifter in my 383 stroker this morning. As you know to replace all the lifters, everything had to be removed....the TBI, intake, distributor, valve covers, rocker arms and the push rods. Replaced the lifters & reassembled everything back and now it won't start. It's getting gas, spark and air. We figure it's the timing of the distributor.....but we aligned it correctly with TDC and still NOTHING. It just cranks, and cranks and cranks..... Prior to this, she ran really FiNE!

Agreed, distributor out 180, bang, pop , bang! Head slap, pull distributor, turn 180, running.
Valves incorrectly adjusted, no bang or pop. Just won't run.
Have spark? Spark at the correct time? Have fuel? Getting into the cylinders ? Have compression?
Should run.
3 things to make it run. Spark, compression and fuel.
One thing is off.

looks like and EFI under there. verify all the power inputs to it. YOu can see fuel going over the butterflies while you crank? Pull a plug, maybe its just dumping in fuel and you are fouled

on the timng for the dizzy, go back though the directions for the EFI, if you are running it so the EFI is controilling timing it has to be synched to the dizzy and locked at a specific timing event

Vetteguy75,

First, put the battery on a charger.
Then go to Harbor Freight. Your best friend right now is a Sparkplug Test Light, about $6.
Install the tool at any sparkplug terminal on the distributor cap.
Without spark verification, you are going at this issue blindly.

First off - walk away from it for an hour or two...

Now - when you comer back to it - you took everything apart to pull the intake - a lot of connectors were removed, and hopefully reassembled. If I were you - I'd go through and check every single one of those connectors.

If that doesn't resolve the problem - pull the driver side valve cover and put the engine at TDC for number one cylinder. If your half a cam rotation off - both valves for Cyl 1 will be a bit open when the piston is at TDC, So once you have verified your at the right position (piston at TDC, and both valves closed) - verify the distributor rotor is pointing right at the number one post of the Distributor cap.

Verify that you have spark at the plug (do a couple of cylinders to be sure - and verify that some fuel is being shot into the engine.

Take the filter off and stare down the throat when someone cranks it for you.......it should be pulsing fuel.....if not, your distributor phasing is probably off since you say it has fuel and spark.......most all EFI systems want some kind of lead on the phase from 15 to 50 degrees......

If you have the HEI system check the module in the distributor. If that fails you would never be able to start the car. It is like a light bulb, when it burns out it is out for good.
