1.73 in washigton. I read in the paper a couple weeks ago about e loop hole in the system that basically give people more incentive to get an SUV. I don't know the details, but it went something like this. They compared a new Fuel Cell car Vs a SUV. Fuel Cell cars give you a 2000 tax break on your taxes, While you can buy a SUV and use it as a business purpose. The gas writeoff alone more than compensates. "This is where I lost track of the story so perhaps someone here knows what I am talking about". Anyways what it came down to is you will save more money by buying a SUV over a Fuel Cellie.
I say lets use what we got so they can hurry up and develop the new form of engines. Heck there is SOOO much more potential in Electric engines than what we ever could see in piston pushers. Just a matter of harnessing it. My out look is to learn what I can so I can be on the frontline of the change when it occurs.
You guys in the states had better watch out - if there's a debate on to up the price to $4 a gallon, things WON'T change in terms of the numbers of vehicles on the road. In the UK our fuel is approx $1.10 a LITRE (approx 1 quart). There are STILL too many cars on the road. The 'soccer moms' here are the ones doing the 'school run' and they're using 4x4's when they really need a mini MPV. All that will happen is that you'll just be paying more TAX for worse roads (that's what we've got here).
There're only about 6 weeks of great weather for getting the Vette out with the top off, and that just makes all those problems DISAPPEAR! Roll on summer.

Re: OT: Gas prices (RMVette)
As Bob says, "petrol" over here is about $4.30 - $4.50 per US gallon, depending on where in the UK your buying it.
And without re-starting the debate, the experience over here is definate proof that the cost of fuel has almost no effect whatsoever on the number, or really even the type of cars on the raod. Although we do have the rather unique "company car" situation over here(80% of all cars are company funded) The huge taxes and fuel costs haven't made the roads any quieter. But, it suits the government to try and tell you that a) cars are the biggest killer of everything, in every way, and b) by making them more expensive to run, we're doing the world a favour. Both are untrue (and yes, I am a member of Greenpeace and yes I have done the reading on the effects of heavy industry, volcanos and even animals on the atmosphere!), but unfortunately most of the UK population is so brain dead as to believe them!
Ok, I get off the soapbox now shall i........ :bb
Oh, and just one other thing to make you guys over there in the uS feel abit better about life :) While I haven't been to the East Coats (New York for instance) I can tell you that the terribel traffic that you all experience in, say LA, is nothing compered to the total gridlock of all "surface streets" that we have in London every day. I live 37 miles door to door from my old London office. Last time I drove up there (18 months ago) it took me just over three hours :mad
I dream of driving down Old Route 66, or across Iowa.............. :steering:
