Default Flexplate gear question

Is there a way to tell if your flexplaye and starter bendex have the correct number of teeth? What number teeth with the flexplate should match with the bendex?

I didn't know it mattered. For my bigblock I require 168 teeth in order for the flywheel and starter motor to engage properly. If I put a 157 tooth flywheel on the starter would be too far away to mesh.
When I put my mini starter on I wanted to check this mesh so I just pried the starter drive out and into the flywheel. If they seem to mesh fine don't worry about the tooth count.
Hope this helps

If I remember right with a mini starter (Powermaster), there are two sets of mounting holes that would mount to the block. One Part # fit both size flywheels. One set of holes was for the large flywheel, another set for the smaller flywheel.

This is for manual tranny flywheels so I am not sure if it applies to flexplates:

Flywheels with two different diameters are used on Chevrolet small-block V8, big-block V8, and V6/90° engines. Large flywheels are 14" in diameter, and have 168 teeth on the starter ring gear. Small diameter flywheels are 12-3/4" in diameter and have 153 teeth on the starter ring gear.
The difference in flywheel diameters requires two distinct starter housings. Starter noses used with large diameter flywheels have two offset bolt holes; starters for small flywheels have two bolt holes which are parallel to the back of the block. Most Chevrolet blocks are drilled for both types of starters. If you are changing the diameter of your Chevrolet's flywheel, you can convert your present starter to fit the new flywheel by installing the appropriate starter nose, starter motor housing, found within each engine classification. You will have to note which starter nose you have and change it accordingly.

Hope this helps

I'll try pulling out the bendex and fitting it to the flywheel. Any one have ideas on why the starter wouldn't spin the flywheel and just grinds? I tried shimming the outer bolt with 2 washers and still have the problem. Any idea will help!!
