Hi all, My 77 is missing the clutch/flywheel cover but the trans is not from a 77. The car is a 4 speed swap. It is a Muncie M21 - 3885010 and the codes on it date it to a 65/67. I see a lot out there about 11" and 10 1/2" covers and don't know how to tell. Any way to figure it out?
There are 2 different flywheel covers for manual transmission bell housings. Look at the casting number on the side of the bell housing. The last 3 digits on the side of the bell housing are either "621" which uses the larger 11" clutch setup or it could be the "403" which uses the smaller 10.5" clutch setup.
The Muncie casting numbers are not important as the Muncie transmissions will fit either setup. These flywheel covers do not attach to the transmission in anyway.
There is a "63 Muncie that will not just bolt in. It does not fit either the "403" or the "621" bell housing. Easy to tell as it has a smaller cast iron front bearing retainer. It uses a totally different bell housing. The "63 transmission will accept the '64 and up larger aluminum front bearing retainer so it can be swapped in. I doubt anyone here would ever run into that.
The transmission input shafts do have different available spline counts (10 or 26) so the clutch disks need to fit the transmission input shaft spline count.
The flywheel, clutch, bell housing, flywheel cover, and starter all need to match here. You can not mix and match pieces in these setups.
