I am in the middle of changing out the 10 year old poly TA bushing that crumbled into a thousand pieces. I have removed the passenger side TA and prior to drilling out the retaining flare, noticed some shim washers. The new rubber bushings only have the beveled washer. My question is, were these shims to make the poly bushing the same width as an OE bushing? When I reinstall with rubber, will my shimming change because they had these shims on the poly bushing?
yes.
to all questions.
you can measure the poly width, and should.
then when rubber bushings are compressed and flared, measure width.
do math, then adjust alignment shims to compensate.
Yes I agree no shims on rubber. But I wonder if I will need to adjust the shim thickness for the actual TA shims that go on the side. Service manual simply says to make sure you put the same TA shims back into the same location.

after you measure poly width and then mounted rubber bushes, you will know.
chances are the will be different.
when the rubber is wider, then remove equal sized shims from inner and outer
(trailarm) mounting the amount of difference from poly.
if rubber is thinner, add equal amount of shims to inner and outer.
once you have the width difference between the 2 bushes styles you will know.
extra shims will be needed to do this.

Service manual MAY be referring to the toe-in alignment shims, that you removed, when you took the TAs out.....
