I recently bought a 1978 Corvette with no motor or transmission. I previously had a TH350 at home ready to be rebuilt but i wanted this car to be a 4 speed so i went out and got a good deal on a stock 4 speed from a 76 vette. However from what i read these are not the strongest stick transmissions out there. I was wanting to pretty well build a 350 or possibly even drop a 454 down in this car, hoping someone can tell me a transmission that’s standard, and would fit with little trouble, but would also hold upwards of 500 hp and 500 tq.
See C3 Parts for Sale for my Autogear M23Z 4 speed transmission.......brand new, built to replace a Muncie or Borg with heavy duty parts........great transmission. I bought two....one is in my 77, the other was destined for my 69 Corvette....which is now for sale...and thus the transmission is for sale. I love it in my 77......solid, heavy duty, ....as for a replacement 4 speed, there is none better.
Rating a transmission for power must be one of the most misleading things in all of Vintage Cardom.......what does rated for 500hp and 500ft/lbs. mean?
Does it mean with slicks? Drag Radial? A street car with bullshit street tires will just spin.......so a "rating" is impossible as there is no load bearing......
I banged the **** out of three Muncie M20's in three different Vette's (a C2 and two C3's).....and nothing ever happened.....all with Street tires......
My Dad banged the **** (brutally) on over 8 or 9 Corvette's as I was growing up.....never lost a trans...(two rearends though LOL)......
Some say the Super T-10 is even stronger than a Muncie...IDK.....but you are not going to frag that trans on street tires.......
I run a M20 behind a 500hp 406 that makes 480ft/lbs., still there.....in fact it is the numbers match trans for the car with 60,000 original miles on it.....and I am not easy on it at all......I drive these cars as intended, hard.
Now the fun part is putting all of the pedal assembly in.......you will be pulling the dash area down to nothing.
