Default 454 performance

Ok guys give I want to hear your performance recipes for the 454. I am starting with a 1987 peanut port head 454 (originally a TBI motor). I do not plan on revving past 5000 rpm. My goals are conservative but I would like 340 horspower at the flywheel and at least 450 lb ft. I would like the power peak to be around 4000 rpm. What cam along with a 750 quadrajet, performer intake and headers will get me to my goals. :D

Hedman headers will work fine & good for much more.
Comp Cams 270H or XE268 will put you over as your goals are too low. They are good min. 454 cams for autos.

I've used the Edelbrock Performer cam before in a Poncho 400,and it would pull 5000 easy, idle like stock, and I'm sure was better than 350hp.I'd have to agree that your sights are a bit low for that much motor. You realize your gas mileage is dependant on displacement. You may as well pull 450-500hp if you're going to get 10mpg anyway. :yesnod:

Good god, 340 horsepower should be a walk in the park even with a "broomstick" cam.

So you are going to be using the P-Nut port heads? The cams that Ganey recommended should work fine for you because those P-Nut heads are going to be done making power around 5000RPM if not slightly sooner.

as you are very conservative on RPM , (5000) The xe262 , range is 1300/5600 rpm, the xe 252 is a 5000 rpm cam , with monster tourque will work with peanut heads...just my 2 cents :seeya

Hey! I just did the following mods with oustanding results to my 454 LS5 engine. I had a valve job to the stock heads and added a 268 Comp Cam kit ( new springs, lifters, timing chain, retainers, etc), new Comp Cam roller rockers and pushrods.
The seat of the pants were AWESOME. It is smooth, powerful and free reving. Best results I ever experienced in modifying an engine! The motor stock is 365 HP and I think it must be pshing 400+. I'll probably dyno this spring. By the way the car is a 71 TT, 454, 4speed. Good luck, Fred the fryguy :steering: :D

It seems like everyone is recommending the Comp Cams product, but I'm buying either the Crane "PowerMax Hydraulic Roller HR-288-2S-12 IG", or their solid roller "SR-238/350-2S-12 IG" (very similar to hydraulic, but slightly more duration/lift)
There was a nice build article using the hydraulic roller in the "How to build Monster BBC's" book. When I plug the cam into DD, it has a nice torque curve to about 4,200RPM.
