Just recently got my 77 corvette driving after a suspension rebuild and full 4-wheel alignment. However, I have been having a steering issue where there is a distinct heavy vibration when turning at low speed. When first started, there can also be a kind of “pop” when first turning as if something bound l up. I suspect it can be column related as I can hear a rattle down there and there’s a bit of up/down play in the column. Just wondering where I should start in diagnosing this. Thanks in advance.
Shouldn't be a rattle or up / down "play" in the column. Assuming it didn't do anything like this before, it would be a big coincidence after a suspension rebuild to be anything else - always a chance but ... I'd lift the frontend off the ground and check for binding and column play. If all is good lower it enough to get some pressure on the suspension and try it again - should let you find anything that's binding if that's your issue. Also, check the steering column shaft (and lower shaft bearing) and rag joint.
Did a shop do your rebuild and alignment or did you ? If it was a shop you could take it back and ask them to check their work.
I agree with 77Blue...Column should not move / rattle...
Check the two bolts at the column mount under the dash.
Then check nuts at firewall.
Maybe the column itself is worn out?
I would jack up the front of the car and have a helper turn lock to lock while looking at the steering components from underneath, just to see if anything is binding or lose without weight on it.
Is it a manual or power steering car?
I had the same thing happen, my control valve went south, so rather then buy a new one for $700-$800 I went to a borgeson system for a$1000, , easy to install and alot nicer steering
Ok I should clarify, my column up/down play doesn’t originate from the lower part and the dash bolts are tight. I think the play is from something in the upper end being loose. I grabbed the lower steering shaft and it’s solid in place. The steering is the worst at a full stop, and it’s really bad then. My rag joint looks new and has no play, but the steering box seems to have a good bit of play in it. When I get a chance I’ll get under it and see while someone steers it.
