I plan to replace my seal with the trans in the car and am trying to determine if there is a way to jack up the car to prevent losing fluid when I remove the gear. I currently have it jacked up on the drivers side to access it and hope that angle will put the fluid on the opposite side of the transmission and prevent it from pouring out.
Does anyone have any recommendations on the best way to jack up the car to avoid a mess?
I'm working on replacing the driven speedo gear right now. As long as you DON'T jack up the front, you'll be fine. I had the front lifted while I was waiting for the new gear to arrive and with the gear bullet loose it had a constant drip coming from it. I figured I lost about quart while it was like that over a week and a half.
Either do like you're doing from one side or from the back OR keep it even and very little (less than a 1/4 cup) will come out.
Completed this project, which was fairly simple. I jacked the car up on the driver's side and pulled the speedometer gear housing out. Surprisingly, I did lose about 1 qt of fluid. Fortunately, I was prepared for this. Unfortunately, I had only purchased seals and ended up needing the gear as well. So I put it back together, lowered it and ordered the gear. When the gear came in, I jacked it back up and lost no fluid.
So be prepared to lose a little fluid, although it didn't come gushing out. One of the easier repairs I've done so far.
