What about the northerners??? My garage is quite a bit warmer than the 6 degs outside last night, and fortunately last summer when I flushed the rad I refilled with 50/50 instead of the usual 10/90 that I have done in the past for better summer cooling....... I think....... ohoh.... better go check! :) MJ
I just started the heater for just that reason, there was a slush in the over flow tank. Hope I got it early enough it was good for -10 we went to -20 last night. I thought the garage would hold a little heat at least , but Noooo
Yes, the optimum mix is between 60:40 and 40:60. I thought the poster was going with 90:10 water/antifreeze. In the last few days at a -40 windchill we have gone with 60:40 at work with DexCool. No problems.
I'm scared! My engine has never been started except for an attempt about 2 days ago. I filled the radiator with water alone so that if there was an internal leak the antifreeze wouldn't kill my engine. It's less than half full in the radiator and I think there's a little bit that trickled into the engine. Should I be worried if it gets below freezing? I'm assuming since nothing is full there should be enough room for water expansion. Any ideas?
Put some antifreeze in the rad. If you are speaking of "just below freezing" I would not worry. If you are dealing with -35 as I am then you have a problem and want to get that coolant into the block. Frozen water (ice) can do amazing things when constrained by steel.
Here in Montana I run strictly the 50/50 mixture in all of my cars, I have had no problems even down to -65F with wind chill. (unless your on the road increasing the wind chill)
