Default t56 transmission swap

Has anyone swapped a 4 speed with a T56 transmission in a 68? Does it fit without a lot of modifications, etc?

I don't have an answer for you but perhaps this thread may shed some light on the subject...

Fits very well you just need to make a removable trans crossmember call modern drive line or silver sport transmissions and I used all the stock clutch linkage and used a quick time bell housing .

Thanks Rat, does the original drive shaft work and did it require cutting the hole bigger in the tunnel?

Hi

The tunnel needs to be opened in a different place for the T56 shifter. The drive shaft of course needs toi be shortened.
The T56 I used has a adapter plate that rotates the tranny slightly in order to get the shifter to a reasonable position.
Bellhousing and cluth stayed original.

Rgds.

Thanks, I have a 68 I’m putting together. I acquired a 69 parts car that had a 427 with a t56 behind it. It doesn’t appear to have been run but it was in there. I’m confused by the need for a new cross member. Not sure about the shifter location either. I’m trying to figure out how to get this in my 68. Also did your speedo hook up work out?

Silver sport or modern drive line will have a speedo adapter and the trimming of the tunnel was very small for shifter I did it a long time ago .

The answer the crossmember question. The T56 is quite a bit longer than a M21,m20,m22,th350,th400 etc. If the car was a stick OE you will need to cut the existing crossemember out of the car and modify it being the mount will sit probably 6 inches further back. You could just fab this idea up yourself or buy a kit to make the crossmember removable

Here is the kit to to modify your OE crossmember. Link. Take it one step further and modify the center section to move the transmission back however far it needs to be moved.

Edit they also make kits for T56 transmission crossmember swaps.

Here is another link to another C3 install. LINK

I believe most of the larger concerns have been addressed. It is well worth the effort in my opinion - probably one of the best C3 mods out there in terms of drivability and finding the perfect gearing combination for both efficiency and acceleration. I run a 3.70 rear end and with the .6 ish 6th gear I can still cruise at 75 mph on the highway at a little over 2000 RPM.

Hi

I cut the crossmember out and installed a automatic removable crossmember a few inches further aft.
I didn't want to cut the crossmember and install a removable piece in it or install a aftermarket crossmember as this is very visible to the governmental biyearly car inspection and they don't like someone cutting the chassis. The way I did it, it appears original.
My T56 is a strenghtened up Viper unit with a 0.50 6th gear. I originally had a 3.70 rear end , but found that the required speed was too high to use the 6th gear often enough, so I installed a 4.11 rear end.
I realy would prefer the 0.6 6th gear, but now need to live with this one.
In 1st gear, at idle, I can step out of the car and walk beside it. Hardly need to slip the clutch anymore for slow driving.

Brgds
