Working on my 74 454. I need to know if it is supposed to have a short style waterpump. I removed a long style. Before I buy a pulley and bracket set I need to know what I should have short or long?? Does it really matter?? Thanks for any replies!!!! Also how many companies offer a complete setup of pullies and brackets for a big block?
:seeya Short waterpump! :yesnod: As for the brackets and pulley's try a company called "Paragon" I think that's the way it's spelled... that's where I got mine. :yesnod:
If you run a long pump, you'll have to modify the crossmember to clear the crank pulley as I understand it. I just ordered pulleys and brackets from Paragon.
#2255 crank pulley, #1353 PS pulley,#1762 WP pulley, and bracket kit #6679K that includes everything for ps/alt. Total was $378. This setup was recommended by Bob Turner, as he is running it on his recent BB swap on his '74. One thing to note is that this setup uses a '69-70 short pump with the 5/8" shaft. Reason: the '69-70 3 groove WP pulley is only $100, compared to the $200+ 3 groove for '71-74 with the 3/4" shaft hole. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the info Troy. The previous owner installed a long WP. I now know why the front cross member had a run in with a cutting torch. Apparently he found out he needed clearence for the crank pulley. I guess I can go with a long or a short at this point. Is one any better than the other?
