I’m about to start up my car after a total tear down. I have this one wire sticking out of the wiring harness at the same spot that the distributor wires come out on the driver side. I have pictures I took before the tear down and none of them show where it goes.
It’s not the coolant temp wire, that’s already hooked up.
It isn’t the distributor either.
I’ve learned the prior owner did a lot of “hack job” modifications and it’s possible it’s not an original wire. Also possible it never was connected and I just don’t remember.
Any advice is appreciated. The red wire on the driver side by the fire wall is the one I can’t find a connection for.
That connection is not from a factory harness. Is it hot or hot when the ignition is energized? Can you trace it back to see where it comes from or connected to? Jerry
I’m not sure if it’s hot or not, I hadn’t thought of that, it is a good idea though. I’ll have to hook the battery back up this afternoon and test that.
I have tried tracing it back but it enters the wire harness and goes through the fire wall. Unfortunately it enters behind the middle dash/console and I can’t see it on the inside.
That's a badly crimped aftermarket connector on a generic red wire. It could be anything. It's certainly not from the factory. Try to trace it back to it's source.
So I haven’t figured out what it goes to yet. With the key in the “on” position it is hot. I also touched it to metal when hot (on accident) and it blew the fuse to my dash. So I have no idea lol. For now I’m leaving it wrapped in electrical tape so it doesn’t touch anything. If I figure out what it goes to I’ll update the thread. Thanks y’all.
Thats my guess as well. Doesn’t look like there is a hot wire going to choke. It looks like the black wire is the choke ground and it needs the hot wire. My Demon choke cap looks like this and needed both to operate correctly.

I'm not familiar with '78 wiring, when you say it blew the dash fuse so am unsure what the dash circuit protects... Are there any Bubba tie-ins to that fuse at the fuse block?
Finally figured out the wire. I believe it was added in by the previous owner for the electric choke. He must have realized it didn’t work because when I got it, the wire was curled up out of view, (found an old picture). I was able to pull it apart enough and trace it back to where the wire enter the fire wall/back of the fuse box. It is spliced in where the wiper fluid pump is wired into the wall. So I plan on just pulling the wire and using another. Thanks for the help/input.
