Greetings All, '77 owner (newbie). Got the vette of my childhood dreams finally. VGC and a lot care and parts went into her by previous owners. I am excited to learn more about the car and work through the minor 47 year old issues she has. This forum has been a tremendous help so far so thank you all for that.
Side window blow out clips, I've searched and search the forum and googled my fingers off. There is a ton of info here and there about the window adjustment topic. I've tried it all for hours and hours on end but the side windows of both doors still catch the blow out clips and push the top of the glass outward. The windows go up and down and seat well on all the newer seals. The only way to prevent it is to close the doors by pushing on the windows so they tilt in ever so slightly...I know this is a bad thing to do.
My questions is, has anyone tried to grab the blow outs with some tin knocking pliers and bend them up ever so gently and slightly just to get the window glass to clear them upon closing?
I understand (via this forum, thanks again) that the clips are in with soft aluminum rivets so being very gentle is the key.
I hope this query does not get me eternally banished from the forum, I am really not a hack, but I've exhausted every dang window adjustment I can find to no avail!
You probably can do that, but first try this. On my 78 there are 3 screws hidden inside the weatherstripping. The weatherstripping can be adjusted in and out, top and bottom. It can move a good amount so thismight be all you need to do. Not sure if your weatherstripping was glued in previously, but these were designed to help align the windows, and if the rubber hasn't been glued in place they work as designed. If your strips aren't glued in, take the top screw out and the rest of the rubber should just pull loose. Then you can see the 3 screws. Once you locate them, make sure it's all loose, put the rubber back and then slide it in and try pulling the whole thing out or pushing it in. You can then tighten the screws with the rubber in place.
Yes you can bend them. Most likely the weatherstrip is glued in place as this is the correct way to install them. Take a large punch. Push through the weatherstrip to hold down the clip just in front of the rivet. You can't see the rivet. But it's centered. Push down just in front of it to support the base of the clip and prevent stresses on the rivet. The clip bends fairly easily. I have adjusted mine, but when changing out the weatherstrip. Still, they bend pretty easy.
Thanks for the tips Kanvasman! Just as you described, the weatherstrip slid easily out of the track and exposed the screws and adjustment slots. I monkeyed around for a few hours adjusting the weatherstrip molding trim but just could not get the darned thing perfect and getting the glass to miss the outer blow out clip. I drilled out the rivets on the clip and it fell right out. The window seals and seats perfectly in the (newish) weather strip. I took it out on the highway and had no window issues up to 80mph. I'm going to leave them out for now and see how it goes. Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for the info 4-vettes. I drilled out the rivets in the weatherstrip track and took the outer clips off....all seems well with the windows on the highway, no issues but the weatherstripping holds and seats the glass nicely. I'm going to keep the clips and work on them on the bench if the glass starts getting wonky on me. Cheers!
