In anticipation of the possibility that my new Borla Pro XS mufflers might be too loud for my tastes, I looked for options that could tone them down. I do wish to keep them as build quality is excellent and the SS construction appeals in terms of durability. I found these cones by DynaTech on the Summit web site. And they look promising. But the smallest is 3" and they cost almost as much as the mufflers themselves. They fit in the outlet pipe of the muffler and quiet things down according to the product description.
Is there a cheaper way of going about this? Borla speaks of venturies in their warranty text but they do not answer my e-mails. So I do not know what their offering is. Any exhaust experts out there with ideas?
If you don't already have one, a crossover pipe will quiet things down a bit.
ANYTHING that you stick in the exhaust is going to restrict flow to some extent.

Re: Muffler Cones/Noise Silencers (Clink69)
This was the reason that I got the 3 1/2 inch muflers was to get the area large enough to use this type of muffler with the venturies. This is a picture of my Borlas with the three ventura insert that comes in the Circle Track ShootOut XR-1s. I would say that the inserts from Borla are quite expensive because this muffler is $259 each and the one just like it that is straight through is only $203 ea.
I want the option of having the Borlas installed, firing it up, determining if the noise level is too high and then putting some restrictors in the back of the mufflers before the SS back tips are welded on.
I hear you! I may just consider the Borlas another experiment gone bad and sell them in their shipping boxes. I like a mellow sound but do not wish to become a magnet for Police. They are brand new.
That may be the solution. I was hoping for a few decibels above stock but the Borlas may be too much. Noise is so subjective it is difficult to buy on-line. The Borlas are new; I can sell them if need be. Perhaps DynoMax?? They have internal baffles. And SpinTech seems to get pretty good reviews. http://www.spintechmufflers.com/spin...ntechindex.asp
Actually, they are perfect for me and I live in a conserative community. I know "loudness" is associated with the name "Borla", but it may not be as loud as you might think.
I was looking for something quieter than Flowmaster and Borla is just that. I do get compliments on the sound. I think you could call it "mellow", but again, it is not quite. Good luck with it! Mark :)
Thanks Mark. I am looking at MagnaFlow also. But as I said this process on-line is just a pig in a poke. What is silent, quiet, mellow, noisy? Different things to different folks. Perhaps I was overly influenced by the fellow the other night who said you could hear Borlas a mile away. That I do not need. But you never know what model he was using, etc.
I read somewhere that those cones will drop the sound level about 4dB.
I don't have any idea about air dynamics so I can't comment on how restrictive they would be. I do know that you can't tell how well they will flow based on how they look. Have you ever seen the filter element for an oil filter? I'd swear you couldn't pass any fluid through them at all, but yet all will flow at least 3 gpm of oil.
