Hello…my odometer has stopped working. I have NO trip gauge just total distance driven.
Every place I contact tells me there is no cable which I find hard to believe.
What’s the scoop? I don’t want to rip the dash apart till I know what I’m getting into

Yes, there are better places to post this. However, for what it’s worth, I had a ‘71 back in the day and it was cable driven. If you can get your hand under the dash around steering wheel column area, you’ll find a half circle clip holding cable head in place. Pull clip away from center and cable housing/sheath will be free. Internal cable can be pulled out, if isn’t broken. Remember this was on a ‘71, not sure if ‘72 is different.
The trip cable is located just sort of below the speedometer under the edge of the dash, same idea as the headlight and wiper override switches.
First thing to check is if it is pulled all the way out. To reset the trip odometer you press it up and turn the **** until the digits all go back to zero and sometimes (frequently) that cable is stiff and doesn't slide back out and leaves the cable still engaged the gear teeth inside the speedometer mechanism and they can't spin with the speedometer
Trip reset cable
Cable pulled out, reset gears disengaged, trip odometer should be working as long as the gears at the other end aren't broken/jambed
Cable pushed in, the odometer shaft slides to the side and the reset gears engage so you can turn it back to zero
Here you can see the drive gear that make it go when the car is in motion. That is the one that might not be re-engaged
