Looking for a complete exhaust system for my 70 LS5. This has tubular headers on it so I will need to custom make header pipes just before the exhaust holes through the crossmember. Any recommendations on buying something from Zip or another corvette place? I will need everything from mufflers to hangers. Thanks
When I installed my exhaust system on my 1968 C3 I had to make a intermediate pipe to connect the headers to your exhaust system. I used Hedman Headers and Jeg's had the intermediate pipe that fit perfectly. I have a 427 BB with the Hedman Headers and a Allen's Stainless Exhaust set of Chambered exhaust system. I love the sound of a big block breathing through the chambered system. There are no mufflers hanging out the rear so it cuts some weight over the stock system. Unfortunately Allen's closed down but others have inventory of their parts and systems. Having a Big block I love the sound of it breathing at low rpm and even more at 5500 rpm.
Just read the reviews of the part you are looking at. Many exhaust systems have issues with droning and that gets really obnoxious over time. Too many of the systems require reshaping the pipes in places to "make it fit". The Hedman system bolted right on with no bending or reshaping.
Frankly......I would not count on buying ANYTHING from ANYONE that will fit properly.....just count on getting custom pieces made, expecially with headers. I have spent countless dollars paying for systems that proclaim to fit....and they don't....NONE of them.
Have to agree. Anything you buy that fits your car will need to be modified anyway.
Ask around at Car shows, your local Corvette club or any Hotrod club. Who do they use in your area. A "Good" exhaust shop can make up the best fitting system with the best ground clearance for your car.

do you have the jegs part number you used for coming off the header?

Call Corvette Central. I installed a stock 2.5" exhaust system from them in my 68 SBC and it fit like a dream. I was surprised considering that 30+ year I had Headers and a fabricated exhaust. Everything bolted up where it was supposed to and I even bought the stock exhaust holders at the rear of the mufflers..... I was quite surprised how well it all bolted up.
They sell them as sections also; so even if you had to modify the intermediate pipes to hook up to your existing headers it would at least be less work -- I actually bought 64-65 2.5" downpipes to hook up to 2.5 Ramhorns since I was going away from headers....the rest was the stock 2.5" sbc intermediate pies and then the 2.5" mufflers..
Can't hurt to give them a yell.

If you are going to fab the exhaust pipe from the header thru the trans crossmember why not fab the whole system? I typically buy a box of mandrel bends from Summit and cut and fit as needed. I use a local muffler shop to expand the tube ends as needed to build the system. Going to be a bunch cheaper than a custom system. Assuming you have wire feed welder. Or it's a good excuse to get a welder. LOL.
There are at least half a dozen complete header solutions, heads to tailpipes, that fit a stock C3 with minimum fuss. No trans crossmember issues, no routing under the 81-82 power seat bump, no weaving around transmission, under the differential, and around the spare tire. No lining up with rear cutouts, none of that. Maybe some dimpling...
All of these systems are Hooker-style sidepipe headers.
