Default Grant 791 telescope issue

The tilt/tele column in my '71 had a lot of movement that wasn't designed in, so took it apart to tighten the cam screws that were loose, and also put in oversize pivot pins from Underground Engineering. Fixed.

Glad I finally got this done, so I could install my new Grant 791 steering wheel that's been sitting in its box for months. Mounted perfectly. Smaller size and increased distance from driver are both pluses. The problem comes when I go to install the tele lock ring. The steering wheel spokes aren't as flat near the center as they are on the stock wheel, and the lock ring binds on the spokes when I get everything tightened down. If I space it out ~1/16", it clears fine, but then the tele function won't lock, as it's star-screw depth-dependent. I could put a little spacer down the center of the steering shaft to compensate for the spacer under the lock ring, but that seems way too kluge a solution.

Any suggestions how to make this setup work?

Yep. Agree with everything you say. Very nice upgrade.

I originally put a spacer down in the hole, but it is thin and needed to have several trials to get right. It was not a good solution.

Putting a weld bead on the end of the star screw and then filing the weld down to fit was the ticket.

I thought this might be the solution after I completed the post. Thanks for confirming!
