Hey there. I have a 76 L48 with a 350. I put on an Edelbrock airgap 2601 intake. I am planning on using the Quadrajet carb. What products have you guys used to get the hood clearance with this intake. I am looking for different suggestions here. Thanks.
A 14 inch "Drop-Base" air cleaner is a great option.
I have the Eddy 7501 Air Gap which is taller yet. But with a 1 & 1/2" drop base and an air filter 2.750 inches tall, I had enough room to include an insulating spacer under the carb. I have 3/8" gap between wingnut and hood. With solid motor motors, there is no contact made between the two.
Some forum members have installed 2.50 tall air filters and even 2" tall units. But you must use caution not to interfere with air flow between the lid and carb.
For example; Holley carbs require 3/4" between cleaner lid and fuel bowl vents. A lid with a slight dome fits this scenario.
I fought with this for years. I have an RPM Air-Gap manifold and require an insulator and heat deflection plate to control heat soak. That doesn't leave much room for an air cleaner. I finally bought an L-88 hood and put on a decent 3" air cleaner. Ultimately the best solution.
Buying a 2 & 3/4 inch tall air filter was much cheaper than buying a new hood / painted to match.
People think they will lose 50 horse because of a quarter inch shorter filter, I guess.
I had an awful time finding that 14" dia x 2.750 element. But it can be ordered at your local NAPA for $25.
If it was only 1/4" I would agree. In my case it was more like 1 1/2". And yeah, I probably have $1000 in the hood, but losing 1 1/2" of air filter probably would cost me a good 50 hp. I have spent more for less.
