I finally got my 74 put together and drove it and it seems that 3rd and 4th gear are reversed. 454 4 speed with a Hurst shifter. I bought it with the drive train installed but I am confused. Any help would be appreciated.
Have you had a look underneath? Could the lever arm be upside down on the transmission?
get your head under there with a camera, take a photo of the linkages on the drivers side of the transmission and post it up on here.
As said check the linkage. My first time replacing a 4 speed when i was about 15 or so i had 2nd where first was supposed to be and 4th where 3rd was supposed to be. lol
I am confused too.
If you have a Muncie or BW ST-10 looking at the side cover there will be 2 levers, one on the left and one on the right. There is also one in the tail- that's reverse.
So, looking at the right stud coming out of the cover, that is the 1-2 gear selection. If the cover was off and you saw the main shaft with the sliders, 1st gear engagement is to the rear of the car, 2nd is to the front. Looking at the left, that is the 3-4 gear selection. The 3rd gear position is to the rear of the car, the 4th gear is forward.
The shifter rods, if you have the correct ones- which may be your issue, are different lengths to reach these studs. I don't see and maybe I am just missing it, but how can you mix up 3 &4? Inside the trans, no way that can happen. The gears are different, the shaft through the cover is the lever holding the fork which is in the sliders for 3-4.
Has to be an issue with the linkage. Put it in 4th gear and see where the lever is.
