I'm in the process of finishing up my front suspension rebuild on my 73 and need to replace my steering relay rod. This is on a non power steering car and my old relay rod is the larger diameter with 3 holes. I have a small diameter non power steering rod that has 5 holes that I would like to use.
I have also installed a Borgeson box to covert it to a power steering setup. Is there any problem in using the small diameter rod with this setup?
You might need to throw a rebuild kit at it, but if you have a manual relay rod, and a manual pitman arm, you should be able to connect those directly to the Borgeson steering box. You don't need to use the power steering adapter that deletes the power steering valve.
At least, that was my understanding, having deleted two stock power steering systems, one to manual (with a manual relay rod), one to Borgeson (with the adapter).

I suspect that you can use either one , but you have to use the correct Pitman Arm with the associated Relay Rod to maintain the appropriate geometry and whatnot.. I looked it up because when I installed Power Steering (ages ago) the Kit came with a different Pitman Arm. Sure enough...they're different.

The original rod's threads that the plug go into are messed up. I took it to a machine shop to have tapped out but they are a odd ball size and don't have the tap size and buying a new tap was around $150.

I have the rebuild kit but with the threads messed up I need to use the smaller rod. Both rods are from non power steering applications so I think the pitman arm should be fine.
