I found a thread that said that one of the 80’s biggest weaknesses is the cat and the headers. I was thinking about removing the cat, would there be any down side to this? I live in Utah and won’t be dealing with emissions. I was also thinking about changing out the headers. Are there any good manifolds that aren’t restrictive that I could scavenge or are new ones my best bet?
An all stock 1980 is not that restricted by the single Cat . But that was 40 years ago who knows what shape it is in now. When performance modifications start to happen with the Engine then it also becomes a restriction. There are no other Exhaust Manifolds that are going to make a bid enough difference to be worth the trouble of changing them. The next step would be to go to long tube Headers and a duel Exhaust. To do this on a 1980 You need to change to an aftermarket Crossmember.
Low dollar exhaust solution, right away I was thinking soup can wrapped around the hole with a couple worm clamps holding it.
I was young once.
As per Your Cat delete question. Look on Ebay for a "Test pipe". Basically replaces Cat with a section of pipe.
didn't think 80's came with any kind of headers. Thought they just had 2 inch manifolds like earlier cars. Guess I don't know much about 80 models.
