This.

I just went through this exact issue.

Good luck.

Is this the 79 you got on 12/12/23 and were having trouble with the air cleaner? But
you were ok with doing side pipes and headers. Of course this was after your deal to trade your Camaro and Harley Hard tail fell through on the 81 that you had already told us you had in a previous thread on 12/4/23...

Or maybe this is the 78 you told us you just got four days later, 12/16, that's the one you wanted advice on which wheels to get.

Probably that 78, 1/16/24, you remember its the one you bought and put right in winter storage with all the paper work in it so you could not give us the VIN. You did post pics of it, an anniversary edition, looked good sitting on all that very green grass, must be special winter grass in Chicago.

But two weeks later 2/4/24 the car is out of storage and you have taken off the intake, distributor, carb and valve train to look at the lifters because of a tick. Got to hand it to ya, that's a lot of work for a 17 year old who has trouble with air cleaners, choke cables and oil leaks....

Oh wait...I'm wrong, it's probably the 79 you "Just Bought" two days later on 2/6/24, you move fast young man... I was a little surprised you needed advice on an oil change after just ripping the top end off your 78 a few day previous.

But maybe it is the 78 after all since you asked on 3/28/24 how to get more power out of it.
But since you were in the process of putting headers and side pipes on one of them on 4/1/24, I guess you might have inadvertently caused an oil leak when you removed the dip stick, I remember that thread!...

But you failed to mention which one of all these cars you are working on for a leak, to give you the proper advice I think we should know...

Thanks,
60

you sir have made me realize how all over the place i truly am here LMAO. It’s been rough and yall can tell i am 17 for sure. Here’s the story yes that 81 fell through that never happened, and the another deal on a 78 fell through that anniversary edition it was in MN. I really like to do as much research as i can onto the projects i will have to be doing on the cars before i make a purchase. I recently on 2/2/34 bough a 1979 L82 with the four speed manual, and that is the one i have now. I do believe in other posts i said it was an 78 on accident, but to clear up future confusion(i will also add this to my bio LOL). I have a 1979 L82 corvette with the four speed. I have done an oil change checked all lifters(found out it was my exhaust gasket that was making the ticking) ive done all the proper maitinence on it. Ive done PS lines the ones going from the pump. Ive done new gaskets on the valve covers tuned and redone the carb new wires and plugs new bulbs blah blah blah and then my peice de resistance the side pipes. I will post pictures of her as she sits now, and then i am planning on doing the carpet and the whole interior. But this oil leak has thrown a big *** wrench in my timeline so i gotta get this sorted. AND OH **** I JUST REALIZED FROM WHAT YOU SAID MAYBE MY DIPSTICK AINT SEATED.

And yes i know a lot to ask advice on an oil change LMAO but this thing is my baby and i dont have a ton of funding here so i dont want to mess anything up at all because god forbid this engine or tranny blows and then im screweddddddddddddddddd.

You guys are the best on this platform and i have loved posting and being a part of it all i wanna learn and do as much as i can, and i know my grammar and my spelling and posts can be confusing, but i truly am here to learn and i thank yall for everything you guys are the best.

Thank yall,

Air_drewdy

Nice car, you have a parking light out.

They make a dye you can add to the oil that uses a black light. Clean the mess up and see if you can find were it's coming from.

How many miles does the engine have? Bet it’s a grooved balancer and hard seal. Or a really sloppy timing chain that ate through the cover.

If you’ve checked the lifters the intake would have had to come off. Did you do the proper procedure of applying sealant to the China wall on the front of the block?

Did you rebuild the Z-bar while it was out?

I'm impressed that you can do all of that: Sidepipes, pull the intake to inspect lifters, then reinstall without leaks, rebuild the carb, etc. etc. etc., and still not post a single clear picture of your engine compartment.

i did have to take it out and disassemble it i did a good job but i think i stretched my spring a little bit unfortunately i really gotta press my clutch down far now LOL. Thank you took me a very solid 8.5 hours of tedious work for those pipes but i got it done. Then im quite pissed about that whole lifter situation since it was all unnecessary, but yes i used all my good gaskets and some good ol sealant and it was a performer so that was easy. And my bad i dont take many pics of the bay its not the prettiest the old owner put some chrome valve covers and a cleaner that needs a new filter and both are pitting so its kinda ugly so i havent taken pics. But i will start takin more.

These are pictures of the bay from when i bought it. Tonight im gonna stop by the storage to get the battery(having some fun issues with that driving an hour home with all but probably 4 volts is real fun) so ill take some for yall.

Thank you,

air_drewdy

Glad to see it, can’t wait for more pictures.

I had my car in storage for about a year and a half only a couple months after buying it. Having only a couple pictures to go off of made it difficult to know what I was in for when I got it back out.

Take as many pictures as possible when you have the car, things like the engine bay, carburetor, suspension, wiper bay, and interior. They’re a valuable resource on the forum for other people trying to diagnose any issues you may be having, and for yourself so you know what you’re working with as you’re planning out your projects.

One thing to note from the pictures you posted. Your alternator bracket is on the wrong side of the alternator. Should be a pretty easy fix as long as the bracket isn’t too bent.

You'd be surprised how often "where did that part go?" can be answered with a picture on my phone.

Have you checked the engine stamp pad? No 79s came with orange engines (though most have probably been rebuilt in the 45 years since that car rolled out of St. Louis). And I've never seen a fan shroud like that in a later car, though that could just be a repair.

Hey guys,
Im back with some more updates here. i got the battery out and i took a look under shes not doin too hot LOL. its a lot of Ps fluid the fluid is more clear, and not as dark so i gotta see if its my pump or that rack down there. the other thing i noticed is a pretty decent amount of oil on my left side exhaust pipe. now what this is making me think is that i have a bad PCV one of yall mentioned that and it seems like it could be my issue. im gonna get a new one and try that out because man if its a bad head or headgasket and god forbid a block or piston im in trouble. but i feel the bad PCV could be my culprit for my leaks causing too much pressure forcing oil out of some places. am i right in that assumption?

and ill add some pics soon

thanks yall,

I know why people put the ALT bracket in front of the ALT "ear".
It allows more flexibility and range of motion when tightening the fan belt. Using a stud, nut, washer, instead of a bolt on the W.P. moves the bracket forward.

If the bracket is mounted behind the "ear", the ALT casing is almost striking the bracket.
