For those of you fellow '73 owners, what style exhaust tips
are you using if you are using non-stock type of mufflers, such
as dynamax, flowmaster, or whatever. I am going to replace my
2" system this spring with a 2 1/2" system to help my new 383
breath better. Looking for a nice sounding muffler, maybe a little
louder than stock. Do I use the the 70-72 style tips or the 73
tips.
Thanks in advance.

We wanted to stay with the 73 tips for two reasons. 1. they are square and the match the square cutout in the bodywork. 2. The 73 tips have the pipe in the center of the tip, whearas the 70-72 tips have the pipe offset to oneside. The way I did it was to elect 2 1/4" pipes and mufflers. The pipe portion of the tip will accept a 2 1/4" pipe inside perfectly. So a 2 1/4" muffler outlet has 2 1/4 inside diameter as does the stock 73 tip. So it was a matter of using a short section of 2 1/4" pipe to couple the two. One end into the muffler with a short amount protruding to slide the tip onto. I drilled a small hole and used a screw to hold it on. Next problem to overcome was the fact that, because the original 73 mufflers were hung on an angle, the pipe portion of the tip was also angled where it enters the square portion. The two pieces of these tips are held togeather with two small tack welds. I chiseled one of the tack welds off. Then re-aligned the pipe portion so that it was straight coming out of the square portion and re-tack welded into position. I also had to cut some of the pipe portion off of the tip to shorten it some so it wouldnt stick out too far. I used 2 1/4" Flowmaster 2 chamber mufflers since they are shorter and provided more room to work. i started from the rear and hung the mufflers with tips attached myself and then took it to the shop to have the rest custom bent using 2 1/4" aluminizid pipe. The complete exhaust system is Dynomax ceramic coated headers into 2 1/4" aluminized pipe with h-pipe welded in aft of trans crossmember into 2 1/4" Flowmaster 2 chamers mufflers. The system is tucked up out of sight and hidden well. Standing behind or approching the car from the rear you cannot even see the mufflers hanging down. The are mounted flush and flat and straight with the underside. The only way I could accomplish this was to use the shorted 2 chamber mufflers. The 2 chamber ones are louder anyway and we like that. Well, thats what we did. Heres a pic
Another point. It wouldnt make much sense to run 2 1/2" pipes just to have them bottleneck into a 2 1/4" tip. Thatv was my reasoning for goin with 2 1/4" pipes. Regaurdless of what you decide to do, heres another pic to show how clean it looks when its all tucked up outa sight. I wish the lighting was better but I think you can see the tips barely.
a drop in pipe size at the tips will not have any adverse impact on your exhaust flow. as the gases travel to the exit point the cool and as they cool the contract in volume. Hot air takes up more room than cold.
The 70-72 tips are offset and the 73's are centered. Between switching the 70-72 tips (side to side) and the centered, you can match most mufflers.
You probably will not be able to tell until the muffler is mounted or see if you can match the muffler to the tips you have.
Hope this helps.
