I think he's telling you to replace it with a 400. SO you want to get a replacement 350? Lots of people here will give you lots of arguments for using something different. Why do you want the same transmission? Nothing wrong with that but forum members might want to know, and that will make things easier for you when you get suggestions for a 400, a 200R4 or a 700R4. Or even a 4 speed. And welcome aboard.

I am just trying to stay as close to original as possible I bought it as a cruiser it only has 50k original miles on it not looking for anything but normal performance

Have you thought about just having yours rebuilt?I am pretty sure any 350 you get will be a rebuild one.

The TH400 is also a 3 speed but heavy duty.
A little heavier, a little more friction, but good for 450 lbs of torque.

Nothing wrong with the th350 you have for modest hp. They are fairly cheap to rebuild, that’s the route I would go.

Throw in a shift kit and a ~2400 stall for bonus points

Why not rebuild the trans that's in it now? More so if original to the car. Any idea why it failed at 50K?

I had my 78 L82 Turbo 350 trans rebuilt in 2016. It had more than 100k on it. I had them add a shift kit. It runs flawlessly now. The rebuild is probably the least costly of all of the above choices.

Mine has 3:55 gears so it would be nice to have an overdrive but since I drive only about 1K per year it not worth it.

Turbo 350 is a good transmission, a good performance type rebuild it will handle a good bit of power.and less parasitic power loss than the other automatics.
Good luck! 👍

Can you look at the pan and determine which transmission you have?

That’s news to me, I thought the L82s came with a TH-400 rather than a TH-350 for all years.

If that’s the case and it is a 350 then there’s absolutely nothing wrong with keeping that.

78 and 79 had turbo 350 transmissions I think the change was a year or 2 before that. But yes the first L-82's had the turbo 400.

From your statements I would just get it rebuilt. Turbo 350s are wonderful trannies overall. If it was me I'd go to a 200-4R but that's neither here nor there from your stated preferences.

Pretty sure all the early C3 automatics were Turbo 400s.....
