Default Expansion tank location?

I'm installing the large diameter alum exp tank in my formerly BB 71 where the smaller brass one was. Dimensions are tight. My question is: does the pressure cap on the exp tank have to be above the radiator?

Click on the URL link at the bottom of my post.......there's a picture of my engine bay which shows the expansion tank on my 71 vert. It's above the radiator, but I don't know if it has to be.

Hope this helps

Mine has no AC......interesting that you had a brass tank. Apparently these were only available on a big block, so I'm wondering if your car was originally a BB? Here's a list of correct setups (supplied to me by a helpful member):

Expansion Tank Usage.....A=Aluminum, B=Brass, N=No Tank

Engine.............................1970. ................1971..............1972
Base /manual ....................A................... ...A.....................A
Base w/AC & or auto...........N......................N. ....................N
LT1....................................N ......................N................. ....N
LT1 w/AC...................................... ....................................N
ZR1...................................A. .....................A.................. ...A
LS5 wo/AC.........................A............ ..........A.....................A
LS5 w/AC...........................B.......... ............B.....................B
LS6..................................... .......................A................ ......
ZR2..................................... ......................A................. ......

Glad to hear your son is having a great time here....of course, I've never heard of anyone who hasn't (yes, I'm bragging!!!)

Any other questions, just ask away!

Standup, My 71 was originally a BB - it was changed before I got it.
