I’m in the process of rebuilding the parking brakes on my ‘78. Need to got ticket for out of date safety inspection. Can’t get the inspection until the parking brakes are functional. Right now I’m missing the right sides all together. I’ve been told I need to remove the rear spindles to install the new hardware and shoes.
Can anyone tell me how?:smash: I’m dead in the water.
Actually, you can do this without removing the spindles or trailing arms. It is a knuckle-busting, skin-scraping job, but it can be done. Most of the catalog companies that sell the kits give adequate instructions for doing this. I did it on my 66 when the car was still new to me. Besides, you really don't want the expense of pulling the spindles out. If you do that, you will be paying for new bearings, races, and the setup. Big $$$.

It's not a fun job. I thought the biggest PITB was the retaining spring on the shoes, but I think the dental floss trick in the first URL may really help that problem.
I got a stainless steel kit from ZIP. I like it and after fiddling with the adjustment for a while (I'd recommend getting most of the adjustment at the shoes and then use the cable turnbuckle for fine tuning) it holds great :yesnod:
I haven't had a problem yet (wood :smash: ), but some here have said you should not use SS shoes because they can "stick" on the backing plate (or something like that).
Thanks for the feed back. I was able to get the new ones on, but I have one more question. Did your old brakes have a socket molded into the brake to hold the adjusting screw? Mine does and it causes the brakes to extend out ~1/8”, so I can’t get the rotor back on.
The adjusting screw that came with the new hardware kit has a slotted piece that mounts on one side where the molded socket on the old brakes were. I’m thinking I need to shorten the adjuster to get it to fit. Any suggestions?
