Yes you need that. It wont let the wipers turn on until the door is fully open. There is a plunger on an arm that pulls in towards the firewall as the wiper door opens and moves toward the front of th ecar. The bolt looks like a carriage bolt and it presses on that button in the center which is the switch. Dont bypass it or the wipers could come on inside the chamber and crush your wipers against the wiper door. If you have a long hood with no door it can be bypassed
