Default Hooker headers installation

How difficult is is to install headers on a 74 SB. I am considering getting hooker 2134-1 full length headers. Are these simple bolt ons or do I have to take the car in to a specialty shop? Is there any welding involved? I am assuming I would have to cut the pipe ( 2") and put a reducer to mate with 3" collectors, and put compression type fittings with bolts. No welding at all. How about ground clearance? Will I have to do any facny fabrications??

I am looking for simple bolt on that I can do myself on my driveway. Am I better off with shorties?

Thanks for the help

You will have to do cutting and welding. For a simple, driveway install, get the sidemounts.

I used Hooker #2456 and it was an easy install. If you have ac then the bracket will need modification per instructions. Also invest in high quality gaskets or you will be changing them again. The only welding is for the exhaust pipe to reducer.

Dynomax headers are a bit shorter than Hookers but are still considered full length. The end a bit shorter than Hookers with a slight downward angle. Ive seen Hookers on a smallblock C3 before and they did hang down a bit. With the Dynomax a bit shorter on a downward angle, ground clearance is better. You can get the Dyno's in ceramic coated for about $210. Great headers. Many on here are using them including me. As far as fabing yur existing pipes to match, It shouldnt cost much to get that short portion made by a shop for not too much. That way it would all fit good. Assuming they do a good job. Or you could mess with that part yourself as well. Do you have A/C? Modification to the bracket may be needed. Other than that its pretty much bolt on.

thanks for the replies. BTW the right PN is HKR 2456-1. They are suppose to fit all C3s. I am buying them off a member, therefore concerned about fit. I was going to buy Dynomax first, untill I found out the price on this. These are slightly more expensive than Dynomax, are ceramic coated full length. My car is auto with no AC.

Will they clear the tranny mount?? I don't think ground clearance would be that big a deal.

I am unaware of any problems with headers clearing tranny mount. Since you have an auto tranny and no A/C, the Hookers look like smooth sailing. Its a matter of fabing the exhaust pipes to fit without touching where they pass thru the tranny crossmember. You might need to re-route yur ignition wires around the header tubes. But thats a givin.

I have seen both part numbers....depending on the site.

Anyway, these are the full lenght ones for Chevy SB, with coating....
