Removing gearshift ****-1982

I want to change the boot on the gearshift of my 1982 but I cannot remove the ****.......before I damage anything.......can anyone give the information I need to remove it......... :smash: :smash: :smash:

It screws off counter-clockwise.

first unscrew the push ****, then the ball itself.

Can you just put any aftermarket one on there? I wouldn't mind replacing mine either...it's getting faded.

The **** is very hard to get off because it's been on there 20 years--a strap wrench is your best bet, or if you're replacing it & don't care if you bung it up, a pipe wrench will do.

I wrapped mine with that rubbery tool box liner material ( about 4 wraps) then used a pipe wrench. Didn't mar the ball at all.

I wanted thank everyone.......it turned counter clockwise as mentioned and the strap wrench made it easy......thanks again.........the Corvetteforum is a great place

I was trying to remove mine this summer during the interior resto but couldnt get the push button **** off and felt I was going to break something so I let it go.

The ball was turning up but would hit the push ****.

Does this push button screw off CCW too?
