Re: at what point is your engine worn out? (Matt Gruber)
When I bought my car it had the base engine and essentially no power. The former owner who had the car five years did not know the history of the engine.
That was enough for me. :steering:

on a normal engine, I'd say when the thing starts knocking or rattling. A blown head gasket will do it too ;) :D

:iagree: As in, "Honey, the engine is acting up, maybe NOW is the time for that rebuild to bring all the horses back!"
1. engine knock
2. excessive oil consumption
3. low power
4. failed internal component
5. too embarassed to drive it because the Honda guys can beat you.

Re: at what point is your engine worn out? (Matt Gruber)
When you can't keep a set of spark plugs in the engine more than a thousand miles without them fouling out because of oil seepage or you have electrodes on those plugs that mysterously disappear you have worn it out.
As someone hinted above... things sticking out of the side of the block or the oil pan is not a good sign either. :yesnod:

When you get out raced by my wife's Toyota Matrix (17.08 in the 1/4 mile).
If you go slower than that, it's time to fix stuff.
