Default Ryobi buffers= junk??

I got a 10" orbital Ryobi buffer as a gift last year. Used it once on my old vette, put it away for a year, and then used it last night for some polishing on my '77. Well, after about an hour of use I noticed the strong smell of melting plastic, and saw smoke pouring out of it. I yanked the plug cause I expected that the dang thing was going to start a fire.

Anyone else have any problems with Ryobi buffers? I know they aren't exactly top of the line (cough cough) but geeez, this is pretty sad. Ryobi told me to take it to the nearest service center for repair- the 1 of 5 locations in this state is an hour away, and I'd have to take off work in order to get it there. Right....

Let's just say that while Ryobi buffers may not be "professional-grade," they're a LOT better than the ones you can pick up at Harbor Frieght for 20 bucks or less...

Capt... I personally use a air powered Dual Action Sander with a buffer attachment... no lectrics to burn up and I can control the speed...

While I don't have a Ryobi buffer, I do have a selection of Ryobi power tools such as a reciprocating saw, circular saw, 9.6v and 12v cordless drills. I think they are excellent tools for the money and I have had no problems with any of mine. They are not in the same class as Milwaukee, Dewalt or Makita, but you can buy 3 of them for any one of the above. I do have a Makita 12v cordless drill and a Makita 4" grinder and they are great. I plan on buying a 18v Ryobi cordless drill here pretty soon.

I do not own a Ryobi Buffer but I do own a Ryobi 6-Pack 18.0v Professional
Cordless work center (Reciprocating saw, hand circular saw, roto tool, Compound
Mitre Saw, 1/2 2 Speed Drill and a cordless Xeon Light)

And I disagree with the comparison to Dewalt and other brands. I compared
the Ryobi 18.0v drill to the Dewalt,Makita,Bosch,Miluakee,Black&Decke r Drills
and the Ryobi felt much better constructed.

It's hit or miss each company makes some great tools. I have friends who have
had nothing but problems with DeWalt, and others that swear by them.. Go
Fig!

Where was this buffer stored? If it's in a damp garage the environment would
be the cause for failure not the tool. Rust and corrosion could have damaged
the bearings or the armature. Or for all I know it could be that thier buffers
are junk.

If you want to see some really bad buffers check out Wen :)

For what its worth, I have a few Ryobi tools, sander, cordless drill, sawzall and all seem pretty good. Never had aproblem. I don't use them professionally but for the do-it yourself type of work they are fine.
