Would having only 10 volts at the coil with key on and not running keep it from starting when trying? Battery at about 95%. Just get the click when trying to start. This all happens after 10 min drive and driveway wash and dry. Thanks. '72 auto sbc
10 V. at the coil is low. But should be enough to spark. You state however you just get a click from the starter. As in the engine is not spinning over.
If so why bother checking Voltage at the coil?
what is voltage at the battery? 95 percent charged battery should be about 12.6 volts.
Click, click, click at starter is low battery or poor battery cable connections. Or possibly bad cables. Check both ends of all 3 cables if battery voltage is good. Neg. Cable under floor is a common issue. Cable from engine block to frame is also often ignored.
Of course another thought is that maybe your starter picked now to die. I think you need to check a couple things. Like battery voltage and voltage at the solenoid.
Do you know how to jump a starter with a old screwdriver? Now would be a good time to give that a go.
Since I could not get it started I decided to try and ignore it, let it sit outside. after about a hour I went out to see if it would start and it fired right up. So took it to get gas, and then droved it for about 30 minutes. Got home and straight into the garage it went. Shut it off, started it right up, shut it off, started right up. I checked the three suspect ground locations and everything is good, most especially the one below battery box. I am really suspecting the battery but will look at that starter again tomorrow. Thanks for all the input. It's not called old Reliable any more. Guess what it's called.
Calm down now. Old reliable is getting old. Could very well be a solenoid issue as someone else pointed out above. Keep an eye on her. Just remember, she's not as young as she used to be.
