Never take the top off a quadrajet on the car. Too many small screws and little parts that can fall into an engine.
Id say if you need to change the in carb filter send it to Lars for a rebuild. Those threads are so fine they are easy to get messed up. And they may be messed up already. He has the stuff to fix it. I'll stick to holleys but. There's lots of good advice here, it is the best free advice you can get.
