Hi , I am just about buttoned up on my front and rear suspension and finally found a person that will do a C3 corvette 4 wheel alignment .. the older gentleman that is doing the alignment told me to order the shims . Can anyone please tell how many shims to order . Do I need front and rear . I don’t want to waste my money and buy to many , or not have enough either .. thank u
The front shims are identical to shims used on millions of GM vehicles from the 60's and 70's. So they should have them.
You can order the rear shims in stainless steel from any Corvette vendor. They come as a set for both sides. Link below.
Harbor Freight sells a 144 pack of shims in different thicknesses that look very close to the original style, all for 10 bucks. I wish I would’ve saw them before I bought mine online.
For the rear I bought a stainless shim kit, it had 4 large, 4 medium, and 8 small shims. (1/4”, 1/8” and 1/32”)
The man who did my alignments sure was happy when I pulled out two packages of the new stainless shims! As expected we found rusted together clumps of shims on the car. I had replaced several components on the rear suspension that required a fresh 4-wheel alignment. The man who did the work loved the strut rods and the other parts to simplify the alignment. He removed all the shims from the entire car and then re-set everything to the settings from VBP. It took many hours and the job was done correctly and the best part it was $99 for the alignment. I tipped the guy more than I paid for the alignment as he was worth it!
If I had not found a guy in NY to do it, I may have drove down to Virgina to have the same guy do mine. You were right to tip heavily. Craftman like him and impossible to find.
