I recently purchased a 73 with the 454 and noticed that the top section of the fan shroud had been trimmed. Would there be any reason for this to have been done?
It’s not uncommon on any year c3 to see the fan shrouds cut, modified, or downright broken. All of this is done when people are trying to gain access to the radiator. With the limited space in the engine bay you’ll run into the control arms before you can get the shroud out, so you’ll see some creative “solutions.”
If you want to replace it or if you ever need to service the radiator it is significantly easier to remove the radiator itself first.
I think another cause for shroud damage is the original engine mounts were prone to failure. Original equipment mounts were simply a rubber block with the metal flanges molded on. This was before the newer mounts , with the metal flanges that countered engine torque if the rubber separated, were offered by GM. The tips of the fan blades could now impact the shroud n chip the edges.
If the transmission mount ever failed in its lifetime, that will allow the tail-shaft housing to drop some. When that occurs, the fan blade tips then strike the shroud.
In summary: If the mount goes south the blades go north.
