can a frame from a 1970 that is a four speed , the welded piece be taken out and one from a automatic be installed? thanks Bill

Simpler task would be to make the existing crossmember removeable.

If you want a removable crossmember then make it such that the exhaust passes under. No use making it removable and keeping those goofball holes that the exhaust has to snake through. Your exhaust can then be a lot straighter and easily removable for maintenance.
I made my own but it would probably be worthwhile to buy something the like Bowtie-Overdrives-Exhaust-Pass-Under-Crossmember (or other) and modify the ends to use your manual crossmember stubs.
Let me find my post about making a crossmember so you can see what I'm saying. I was going to buy one but they didn't have any the day I called...so I made my own.
Here you go.... it would have been easier to modify a prefabbed unit (and probably cheaper since I ended up buying a plasma cutter) and modifying it to insert into the Manual Crossmember stubs i had left on the frame. Anyway...take a looksee: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...an-gasket.html
