so I just finished installing a new comp cams 268H, double roller timing chain set, promaxx 183 aluminum heads, and a set of Doug’s 350 headers (planning on true duals if I can get it to an exhaust shop). After a bit of learning curve adjusting CCC distributor timing so it would idle, I took it for a spin down the street and noticed it didn’t want to go into 3rd. The open headers are a bit obnoxious so I didn’t push it, but offhand would a cam swap cause an issue like this due to low vacuum? Shifting was normal prior to me tearing into it. Thanks for your help.
I can’t see anything obviously wrong with it but this is my first time taking the carb off and reinstalling it. What should I be looking for (other than hooking that eyelet on)?
there is a metal tang/button on part circled.
press and hold while you move the black sleeve(cable comes out of) towards fire wall.
this shortens how much sleeve extends from circled part.
then, move carb throttle to full open.
this will move sleeve to proper length for shifting.
Thank you for explaining! I adjusted it the way you described it, I measured the initial exposed wire length (about 66mm) and after going thru the steps that shrank to about 55mm. I’ll let you know how the road test goes, I’m a little worried though because after looking at my pictures before I started my project it was set at that “backed out” length.
Did you accidentally not reconnect the vacuum modulator line to the transmission?
I just double checked under the car and saw that it had jumped off the barb! Probably when I was maneuvering the line back into the manifold. It’s a steel line with a small rubber boot on the manifold end and the modulator, is that rubber boot covering the barb end of the modulator and the line end enough or do I need to try and get the steel line inside of the modulator before sliding the boot over it? First time dealing with this sort of vacuum transmission system. Thanks for the tip!

Just wanted to let you both know it looks like it was the vacuum line on the modulator. She shifted great on my test run today. The kick down cable definitely needed adjustment too, it didn’t look like it was set at all previously based on the coloration. Thanks for your help!
