I am working on a 1970 with a 454 and 4-speed shifter. The car sat for 30 years with no love. The 4-speed shifts smoothly in 1-2-3-4 and into reverse with ease. However, going from reverse back into neutral, it can get hung up and not go into neutral without some effort. I am lathering it in penetrating oil and it is getting better.
The same sticky issue is when the engine is running and clutch in, and when the engine is not running. Yes, I have changed the lube in the trans. The car shifts smoothly, but it is just getting stuck from reverse to neutral. I will check the linkages this weekend, but also read that the three shift plates could be loose. Planning to go through it all, but wanted to ask if there is anything other to consider.
There are kits (with spacers) that the restoration vendors have that allow the shift arms to be adjusted perfectly, not to expensive. Also make sure your arms are held on my “G” Clips and not cotter pins. Is the long shaft that is for getting into reverse in good shape, as it allows you to get into reverse when you pull up on the shifter. Use Google to search for some step by step shifter adjustments. Good Luck.
