Hey everyone,
I am about to install Doug's Headers on my 1980, I have read the instructions and I am not a stranger to installing SBC headers. My question is around what is never really published in full, the deletion of the smog/pollution components from the car. Hypothetical question of course. I can see the air pump and the exhaust connected hoses/pipes but the other hoses and components that need to be bypassed/plugged I have no idea. Has anyone documented this fully?

Only thing that comes to mind is the vacuum line to distributor advance should be connected to manifold vacuum directly, no TVS valve. Everything else isn't needed.
Are you running the stock air cleaner?
[QUOTE=Golfobsessed;1608367170]I removed it all from my 80 when I installed Doug's headers
Which Dougs headers did you use? Did you have to do any modifications to make fit?
I have a 1980 C3 and I am installing headers soon.

I actually installed Doug's headers and side pipes so perhaps a little different under the car but no modifications needed at all, just shorter spark plugs

Torque-Thrust wheels and chrome side pipes.................
The TV show on Motor Trend channel called "Engine Masters" had a test recently where they demonstrated that an engine with a small cam makes little power when using headers where as if you had a big cam it would make a bigger difference. Using the factory cam in your 1980 Corvette it is unlikely that you will create a bunch of power going with just a set of headers. Besides your engine compartment is very full as it starts, adding headers might be a fire hazard on a very busy engine compartment.
I am using Long Tube Headers on my C3 with it's L88 clone engine but the best change was when I went to the Chambered Exhaust Systems for a freer flowing exhaust system and no mufflers hanging out the back. The chambered exhaust is a exhaust system that sounds "almost" like side-pipes but the noise is behind you. When I purchased the system I was offered three different levels of noise and I think I chose the middle of the road.
It is "noisy enough" that you don't want to run it near your neighbors house early in the mornings. It is "quiet enough" to be able to speak and listen to the music inside the car but very noisy behind you. The local LEO's don't have any issues with the noise as long as I don't pass one of their substations going 6k rpm in 3rd gear.
I have Chambered Exhaust systems on both my C3 and my C4 and they have been used for over 25 years very happily. I chose the Aluminized Steel pipes for the Chambered Exhaust on both of my Corvettes and after all this time the systems are still in working order so there is no real reason to buy the S.S. versions unless you have a ton of money you want to get rid of.
When I see the Beautiful Chrome side-pipes on a Corvette the scar on my leg reminds me why I don't have them on my C3. Road-racing motorcycles helped me acquire the multiple burn scars on my legs but the Corvette side-pipe burn will outlast the little scars.
I raised two kids while owning this C3 and I did not want any of them to be burned like I was. I love the looks of side-pipes but after riding in a C2 with side-pipes for more than an hour gives me a headache and my ears hurt. When I get into my C3 convertible it is such a relief to have the quieter exhaust and the noise is behind you. I don't even need ear-plugs when driving as the engine is music cruising along at 70 mph.
I appreciate every conversation. I love talking cars for sure. I am pairing the side pipes with a 268H CAM from Competition Cams. I too went with middle of the road mufflers to go inside the Doug's side pipe. I too had a very nasty burn on a motorcycle pipe on my ankle that later required nurses holding me down while a doctor scrubbed the first scab off (horrific I know). I ride a Harley and like the sound of the rumble. I know noise can be hard on long trips but I still like it on the short trips. Black pipes on a red vette is a very sexy look that I am going for.
