Default 1968 alternator exciter wire question

Looking for some guidance… when I first inherited this car, the alternator was not charging the battery. I was able to figure out that the exciter (brown) wire was not getting 12 volts at the regulator. I ran a wire from the fuse block to the regulator and was able to get it to charge the battery. However, if I leave the jumper wire hooked to IGN terminal on the fuse block, the car will not shut off with the key switch. If the jumper wire is put on the ACC terminal on the fuse block, it will shut off with key. I have verified that both terminals are dead when key is off. Anyone have any clue why this happens? It works fine if I leave it on ACC terminal but would still like to correct the problem or be able to move it to the IGN terminal at least.

On my 77 the exciter wire will not have voltage if the gen light is burned out. The bulb is part of the circuit.

The brown wire with white tracer coming off the voltage regulator goes through the bulkhead connector and should be hot off the ACC terminal on the ignition switch.

Here is a wiring diagram I found somewhere.... you can chase down that brown & white lead mentioned above.

I will go look for the post I used to convert to a CS-144 because it tells you how to do some resistance checks...... I'll see if I can find it. ....

The relevant text for the resistance check is immediately below..... really just to ensure you do NOT have excessive resistance since you are not doing a conversion.
And, below that is the link for doing resistance check when evaluating to upgrade to a CS-144.

"If you are unsure which adapter to use, measure the resistance of the exciter line. Disconnect the positive battery cable and the alternator plug. Connect an ohm meter between the #1 terminal on the plug end of the alternator harness and the end of the positive battery cable. Turn the ignition key to the "on" position and read the ohmmeter. If resistance is less than 35 ohms, use adapter #8078. If it’s between 35-350 ohms, use #8077. If it’s more than 350 ohms, you have excessive resistance somewhere in that circuit which needs to be repaired, first."

...the above text is from idavette dot net (doesn't appear to work anymore).

that's the guidelines I used to wire mine in and it worked from the get-go.

On my 1968 car (and looking at the schematic) the #4 brown wire should go to the ACC connection at the fuse block. I almost get the feeling this connection is to hold off energizing the alternator when in the ignition ACC position. There is a fusible link coming off terminal 3...is that in good shape?

Here is a schematic of the regulator and alternator area connections attached for reference.
