I'm at work, and the system was rated at 1.6 megabits per second

Your raw speed was 1648755.82 bits per second which is the same as:

Communications 1.6 megabits per second

Storage 201.3 kilobytes per second

1MB file download 5.1 seconds

This is like 50 times faster than my snail-modem at home

I have had high-speed for about three years. You take it for granted after awhile. I'm currently using a telephone line hookup and it is very dependable.

I just didthe speed check thing and it says I'm running at 386 KBps. My little desktop icon says 10 Meg when I check the connection status. I think my ISP is trying to seem faster than they really are.

Cable is the only way to go. Like they you can never go back. It is fast. As quick as you click on the forum topic with pics, they are there.
I did the speed test and got this

Communications 1.7Mbps
Storage 210Kbps
1 MB file download 4.9 seconds

You will love it.

Don't get confused: the icon showing 10Meg is showing you the speed of your network card. If you were on a 100 Megabit network and had a 10/100 card it would display 100.

At 386K that sounds like home DSL not cable. Is that correct?

Which is better -- DSL or cable modem?
I'd have to say that cable is probably the best way to go. I have friends who were running AOL's DSL & Covad's DSL(all running off of SBC's network) and they agree that Roadrunner is better now that they switched. Always on... no dialing up.

My speed this morning:

Your raw speed was 2137197.07 bits per second which is the same as:

Communications

2.1 megabits per second
How communication devices are rated. Kilo means 1,000 and mega means 1,000,000. Examples include 56k modem and 10Mbit Ethernet

Storage

260.9 kilobytes per second
The way data is measured on your hard drive and how file sharing and FTP programs measure transfer speeds. Kilo is 1,024 and mega is 1,048,576.

1MB file download

3.9 seconds
The time it would take you to download a 1 megabyte file at this speed.
