Default 82 Engine modifications

Looking for some technical advice on the Cross fire injection. I'm looking to "wake up" the stock motor by putting Fuelie heads from a 70 LT-1 and put a bigger camshaft in, then put everything back on top like its never been touched. Will the Cross fire injection work?

Just about any aftermarket aluminium head is much better.
And truthfully, No, your crossfire setup and computer controlled distributor are not going to play nice. The Renegade manifolds have been out of production for a few years now. And retuning what you have is basically impossible as no aftermarket ECU's are available anymore.
Now that I've said all that, perhaps someone will pop up with knowledge I don't have.
Bottom line, A stock 82 isn't a good start. And old fuelie heads are not that great.

The crank, rods and pistons in your 82 are fine if still in good order.
How about a nice cam of your choice, some good aftermarket aluminium heads. 64cc, 180 runner's. A nice aftermarket intake manifold, let me guess, you want it to fit under the stock hood? A performer or a EPS manifold, Holley sniper or FiTech or Aces EFI With a distributor of your choice, nice long tube headers, etc.
Lose the crossfire. Go fast.

This is what I did in my early days of CFI ownership. Wired in a ECM from a 92 Chevy truck, burnt my own chip, TPI fuel pump, and a single high Flow catalytic converter. That got me to a 15.2 in the quarter. At this point the engine still looked bone stock.
Next a set of headers running through the same catalytic converter. That got me to a 15 flat in the quarter.
Next I am swapped out the 2.87 rear for a 3.07 and a pair K&N air filters. That got me to a 14.75 in the quarter.
AI'll these are times are on regular BFG/Cooper Cobra tires. I hope this helps.

FWIW, the 82 Crossfire had slightly higher compression than the previous L48 engines (9:1 vs 8.5:1).

Perhaps ditch the heads, intake, and Crossfire, but keep the EFI with an aftermarket tunable TBI system. You should be able to get 350 HP with some top end mods and exhaust, if the rest of the engine is in good shape. And you'll be thousands of dollars into a 42 year old engine without a roller cam, that still needs a distributor.

Or, LS-swap, and the sky's the limit.

If you take the top plate off your CFI intake, you see long runners where air has to be sucked through drinking straws to get in the cylinders. Some people ground out the inside to open up the flow. Not sure it made a difference. I considered trying it back when I had my 82, but after researching the multiple limitations with intake, heads, transmission, diff gears, I decided to keep it stock running perfect and just enjoy cruising. If I want to build a beast, I will get a 70’s Nova with lots of engine bay room and a solid axle.

I'm running the 461x casting fuelies on my 80 with 9.5-1 pistons w/480L 288dur cam w/750 dpump. Making cclose to 500hp. I had the LT-Fuelies on at 1st and i was in mid 400. 64cc chambers on the LT1's, 61 cc on the 461's. I know there are aluminum heads much better,(Trick-flows on the 78) , but with the 80 and 82 I like to lift the hood and unless you know what to look for, at 1st glance it looks like the stock motor. Thats my inquiry if the fuelies will work w the 82. I know nothing, admittly, about the Cross fire.

I recall someone knowledgeable mentioned the two throttle bodies to talked about 750ish comparison for a carb size, but the problem was the necked down process of getting the mixed air to the cylinder. The solution was the Renegade Intake. That intake solved the OEM intake issues while preserving the Crossfire system.

Someone on this forum in the last week mentioned he has an original Renegade he may be selling. I can’t recall the member’s name. If you could score a Renegade with the heads you have, maybe you would have something special.

The “Toddrun” is the one with a Renegade he mentioned he may sell.

Hmmm... that would solve the "appearance" problem also. I will look further into it. Thanks.

I got a 78 and an 80 that go real fast. I just want to figure out how to go surprisingly fast with the Cross Fire. Without tearing up the drivetrain like the other 2 did.

I don’t think anyone knows more about getting the most from CFI than he does.
