The weather was good today and I had to take the Vettes for a drive.
After driving the 72 Roadster and putting it back to bed in the garage, I fired the 68 Big Block up. Those flowmaster 40's never sounded better.
I have been driving Corvettes for 38 years and have been waving everyday. I never fail to raise a hand and wave to other Corvettes, but C5's have really been getting to me lately.
About one mile from home I see this nice looking C5 red coupe coming. I just looked the other way and did not wave. I guess I have had it with them for hardly ever waving back.
I will continue to wave to the other generations. I guess I am just a bad, bad boy,or just getting to old to care.
As a C5 driver I must confess that I am guilty of not waving nearly as much while driving the Z as when I am in the 69. Perhaps the biggest reason, other than knowing I am better than "stink", is that simply I forget I am in a Corvette. Normal cruise in the Z is quite un-dramatic. The 69 with the L88 bellowing through the side pipes never lets me forget.
I wave to everyone, but I often times receive "the look." You know what I'm talking about, the look of "why are you waving to me." Followed by what feels like a pitey wave. It honestly doesn't bother me...I just keep waving! You can always tell the Corvette enthusiest, he will have his hand out the window as if he were trying to flag you down (that's me :) ). Just keep waving....it doesn't cost anything .
I know the feeling well and it is sorta sad. I have noticed my recent waves to C5s are kinda half-hearted. The reward comes when passing another C3; most of those guys really know how to wave.
I keep seeing the same Orange C3 on a road near my home. Although we have never personally met I feel we are the best of friends.
Many of the C5s are first time owners and just do not know any better. BTW, my other car is a C5 Vert and I have owned vettes over a period of about 30 years.
I still wave regardless. Some people, through no fault of their own, are just ignorant of the tradition but will eventually figure it out after being waved to a few times. If the other driver does know the wave but is just too lazy, we can at least make them feel guilty about not waving :).
In the county I live in (Martin) There are tons of C5s mainly because we have the second highest per capita income in the state. so as I drive the 8 miles to and from work everyday I will pass 2 to 3 vettes most days.
I have learned not to wave because they think I'm crazy and they don't have a clue why :seeya :seeya :seeya
I dont know what part of Al. your in but here in Yankee Alabama it was sleeting and cloudy all day. I know how you feel about the wave . I get the look all the time like I am crazy. I wave when I see a sharp car even if it's not a Vette . I have a 66 GTO and a 49 Chevy truck . 69 "427" Monza Red
Hey, maybe we could get the General to put this little guy :seeya in the heads up display on the windshield, then we all would get the wave automatically. :jester
went for a 225 mile ride today...
past 3 vettes...
the C-2 didnt wave...
the C-4 did...
and the C-5 did too!
i was kinda suprised actually because i find your experience to be very familiar here too...
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
Re: I Was A Bad Boy Today (Mystery Machine)
When I wave at a C5 most of the time I do not get a response as the person driving is probably trying to figure out how to come up with this months payment. I then usually give them the one finger wave out the open t top after they pass :D
Just a note on this, I do not mean to paint all C5 owners the same I do get waves but only occasionally. I did have a younger C5 driver pull up beside me and roll the window down and say " Nice car " so it all depends on who is driving them.
Strange...I get waves from all generations almost every time. In both my '80 and my '94. Even the simultaneous kind where you know they're not just waving because you did.
yea there is this guy with a fully restored c-2 and ive passed by him a few times honking and waving but both times he didnt do anything other then give me that go to hell im a rich ***** look. Then i saw him at the detal car wash by my house and i stoped to talk to him as long as other were doing and he was nothing but a ***** butt hole to me. Sure im only 18 and he wa slike 35 but still whenever a corvette guy comes up to talk to me i always shoot the breese. Ive even been late to school over tlkaing to corvette oners. Back to the c2 guy he was really mad when he was cruzing down the street and i waved again and he saw who i was in the corvette and he was all pissed off so i decided to smoke his ride comming up the street. One time i was driving to the gym and i saw a hot turbo z06 on the freeway so i jump on the freeway and finally catch him and he actually waved as we both got off the freeway at the same offramp ... It kinda makes my day when i see other vettes driving down the street and the actually wave to me. Just tonight i always see a red 96 parked out side this diner and tonight i was comming home and saw it and i waved and she smiled back so at least she kinda knew. I get the most waves from older people 40+ most of the time c4's because ive only seen 2 c3 in my area including mine and the other on is the exact car as mine but looks worse and runs slower :)
so keep waving people will catch on to whats going on, just because you drive a new vette doesnt give you the right to be a *****, if you wanna be a ***** go drive a lexus or a bmw...
