Carter pump failure with findings.
so started with a straight engine cut out low speed on a hot day. Car started drove normal after.
next went for a cruise on a hot day. Car ran great for 45mins till stuck in traffic, got warm, started shuddering under light acceleration with crackle and pops then recovered.
end of the day no more issues until a throttle wide open departure from a mates place after chatting in his drive for 10 mins, car hot, total engine stoppage after misfiring (not carb but exhaust). Let it cool, drive it home normally.
Problem got worse and only seemed heat related, went through all culprits, coil, leads, reconditioned the Qjet, new fuel lines throughout, removed and inspected pickup in tank, its a year old. Still had the issue. Swapped to another Pertronix anther matching coil, new cap and rotor, still did it when hot.
Bypassed ignition system coil direct to battery with switch. No fix.
only thing it could be now. The fuel pump. 1 1/2 year old Carter removed and bingo. It’s got a valve set loose floating around in it. Waiting on the pump now but confident it’s the issue. Why hot, who would know!!

Did you by chance measure the fuel pressure that was coming out of that pump? Are the parts in the fuel bowl pieces of the check valve inside the fuel pump?
I have had similar issues with other name brand products that are junk today. I will replace a part once, if the same part fails again then I find a better brand/quality part.
Today I have a Holley Stealth Sniper EFI system and I have the correct Holley CAN sensor to allow me to see the actual fuel pressure on the dash panel of the EFI display. I like to have an idea of the fuel pressure is just for verification purposes so having it on the corner of my dashboard will suit me fine. The same went for my Air/fuel ratio gauge when using my carburetors.
I hope you can find a better fuel pump easily, it being the middle of your Summer months. Good Luck and I wish you the very best in getting your Corvette back on the roads where it belongs!
Best regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,
I’ll get myself an Eledbrock pump in the near future. They’re crazy expensive here in NZ (Us$350). I didn’t measure fuel pressure because I didn’t have the equipment and also was chasing an apparent “hot soak engine cut out” Issue which at first presented more likely electrical. Being a mechanical pump I couldn’t understand how the car ran so good cold and warm but further research points at a further drop in fuel pressure with hot fuel and an increase chance of fuel vapour lock. Also I think the valve was in various states of failure before it popped completely out of the mid plate. I believe a fuel pressure test would have possibly detected the issue. Great set up you have there BTW! Certainly hope I get to enjoy the last half of summer.
