How Hard To Get Plates Refinished?
Just curious, has anyone refinished an older license plate to make it look new again. I have a tag from around 1970 that I would like to put on my car but it needs a little sprucing up to look really good. Any tips or hints or where to send one to get it redone would be nice.
Thanks for any help.
but, when i repainted the frount of my car i just took the plates off and put parts of it in the vice and bent it strait as i could. Then i gave it a once over clean job. Then i took some of that gloss sleant spray paint and gave it a few nice coats over and it looks just like it roaled off the factory line. Minus the minor dings that wont come out and a few scratches.
but i personally wouldnt mind having it sent out and repainted
I picked up a set of '72 plates at a swap meet and tho they were in decent shape, I thought they should be better.
I had fits trying to get the numerals right. No mater how hard I tried or what method I used to apply them it just didn't look right. After several failed attemps I found the best looking job was to spray the base color and when it was dry, I carefully dipped the plate into the color for the letters/numbers that I had poured thinly onto a sheet of masking paper
Re: How Hard To Get Plates Refinished? (yellow 72)
I have done a couple of these for myself and it is time consuming,at least the way I do it.The best and cheapest way would be to find someone who does truck lettering or sign painting. You could also check Hemmings, there are a few places in there that do it.
If you like ,Ill tell you how to do it but like I said it is time consuming.Ive also painted some old Coke machines the same way. :seeya
I spray painted the whole plate and then brush painted the letters and other raised areas. Passed DVM inspection. This was for a 27 T. I got lucky several years ago and found an old man who collected TX plates for years. I bought them for the 67 and 71. They were brand new. I bought several others for older cars and this man was more interested in seeing the plates put to good use as he was to making money on them. Cost about $10 a pair.
