Casting numbers will get you only so far.
What you need is the numbers stamped into the case (if any) and the ratios from between the input and output shaft.
And, just because "it came out of a 69 Camaro doesn't mean it started life there.
Your main case casting number #3851325 is likely from a 64-65 vehicle.
You are correct!
I'm upgrading to 5 sp and would like to sell this trans first.
The Hurst shifter had to be pieced together from two kits to fit my 74.
It is in the car so a prospective buyer can go for a test drive!
Asking prices are over 2K.
I bought my 74 as a parts car.
It had a 327 this trans and a unknown rear w/3:55 gears.
I couldn't ID the rear end, what would come with this engine and trans?
What car was running an M21 in 64-65?
Hopefully someone just has to have my trans! LOL
How do you know it's a M21 ??
ALL you can be sure of is that it's either a 1964 or 1965 Muncie.
They are NOT the most desirable Muncie but if the stars line up for you - a snowballs "chance" it might match someones car.
Until you get it out YOU won't know what ratio Muncie it is .
I know it is a cr muncie, that is why is want a wr 5 sp.
The M22 didn't come out until later.
What else could it be?
My engine is a tq monster, it will easily pull the gaps between gears.
The tall first gear is a pain even w/3:55
M22 has the same ratios as an M21.
Yeah if you had a M20 - WIDE ratio you wouldn't have a problem pulling away in 1st.
Your engine must REALLY be built up - not to be able to deal with a 3.55 rear end BUT you say it's a torque monster ?
My sb has 330 rwtq @ 4K.
I have driven it this way since I bought it.
I want a lower first gear and .70 5th.
Better shifting would be nice.
I'm building the car I always wanted.
I have a 1968 C3 with its 427 BB pushing 560+ hp and a ton of torque, and it works great with my M21 and the 3.36rear axle ratio. The car accelerates "violently" and will spin its tires until they pop with a 3.36 rear and a bit of power.
That car should be able to cruise all day at 60 mph and last a hundred thousand miles doing so with that combination. While cruising at 70 mph I can drop a gear and be over 100 very quickly.
If the shifter is "loose" and no longer precise, then buy the parts and rebuild the shifter. If that is not enough, try the Hurst Shifter on the M21, that is a great combination. I have the Hurst on my C3 and it is wonderful, the shifts are precise and the throws are shorter that with the factory linkage.
Finding a 5 or 6 speeds gear box designed to handle my Torque levels would be a very expensive. If I break an original part there are people who will sell me a better style original part which bolts right on my Corvette.
Now where should he go to buy PARTS to rebuild a shifter ? I have some old shifters that I need parts for ?
What makes a Hurst shifter on a M21 as opposed to any other tranny a "great combination"- M20 or 22 wouldn't be as good ?
There are Corvette suppliers who will sell you a rebuild kit for your factory Shifter. Zip products sell the 1969-1982 shifter rebuild kits for $33.00 It was mostly small parts that consisted of bushings and spacers. It is a fairly easy swap of the older parts for the new fresh parts.
The Hurst shifter worked really well on my M21 transmission. I personally have not tried it on a M20 or an M22 or I would offer my opinion on those setups with a Hurst. If they share external dimensions then they might work just fine and be part of another great combination.
I personally installed my Hurst shifter in a matter of a couple hours. It went on very easily, the setup and adjustments were a breeze. The difference in the how well they work is amazing.
The bolt pattern where the shifter arms attach to the trans changed over the years. Some trans had studs there (early??) and others had bolts. Different levers. That's all.
We even used to drill / dremel out room for the bolt to alter the levers and make them fit. The studs and their correct levers had flat sides.
The rest of the Hurst shifter should be the same from 63-82. C2/C3. Maybe a diff handle on the C2s.
What rear end would come w/M21 and 327 engine?
I found #3868403 on the trans.
What is a running and shifting M21 w/proper vette linkage worth?
The original shift linkage was for the previous car.
I won't drop the trans until it is sold.
Then I can replace w/5 sp.
How can I tell what car it came from?
