Re: OT: Shuttle Wreckage Photos (QuickVet)
Very sad day for NASA. I was in Las Vegas airport when it flashed on the TV and watched it until my flight left.
When you finish the slide show click on EXIT SLIDESHOW and there are several more pictures on the left side of the screen. The ones from the show are first and then a few more that weren't on the show are available to view.
Said in the paper they think a piece of ice formed where they were expelling water from a side port. It broke off and damaged the craft. Maybe now we can upgrade these ships. They are about antique. It's time for the next level of technology to show its new and improved model.
Years ago I heard a man running his mouth about sending all of that money from his taxes into space and nothing in return.
My friend that worked for NASA Research at Redstone explained to him that all that went into space was scrap iron. Not a big loss at all considering the technology gained from the program. He told the guy that all of the money spent went back into the economy and surely reflected somehow on his own livelihood. Scrap iron is cheap.............the only loss I have seen of significance has been the lives lost in search of a better tomorrow.
Again God rest their souls and Godspeed to the future they gave their lives to provide us. JIM
I too would like to see a new generation of shuttles. I think if the Airforce prefects that scram jet they have been working on and we fund the development for a space capable nuclear reactor, then we can bring space travel to the masses. It would also bring new buisiness oppertunities that would push the need for technology improvements and would allow the space program to start to support itself.
What Nasa does next is really important for the near future space development. They need all the support and encouragment that we can give them.

As someone directly involved with the space program I'm very happy to see a lot of you that are in support of our country's effprts even after such a huge misfortune. Many people don't feel that same way, let's hope we can continue the work in space.

I was in an airport as well and just happened to be watching the same time as they lost contact. It was a similar feeling to 911, not as devastatating, but strangly dreamlike and sad all at once.

Good thing that the same attitude wasn't prevalent during the time of Megallan, Columbus, and the rest. I don't really have the nards to get in a space shuttle, but I'm glad that there are those that do! :flag

Re: OT: Shuttle Wreckage Photos (Avette4me)
I’m glad I could pass this along to you. I wasn’t sure how long the link would survive not knowing how sensitive these pictures were.
Yes, this was a tragic event. I was very touched by the passing of the crew members of this vessel. They knew their risk, but still took up the adventure to go into space. I’m sure that they were full of joy and anticipation as they were about to re-enter the earths atmosphere on there way home. Where upon arrival they would be greeted by their friends and peers congratulating their accomplishment. And then this tragic event stopped them from the completion of this trip.
What a thing it would have been for them to walk among the men of Earth and be able to say that you had flown on a Chariot of the Gods into the Heavens above.
Sad, Yes, but still no different than any of us in our daily travels who have no guarantee of arriving home to our family safe and sound. I have seen many nights while on the Sheriff’s Patrol when a call would go bad and I would wonder if I would get out of this one or not. I still went back and I kept the desire for another adventure. I believe this is the strength of most good men, and it is as the old saying goes, ”Get back up boy and get on that horse again” and so should our space program.
As I stated earlier. Many feel that this is a waste of tax money on the space program. I personally do not believe that. I’m sure we only see a very small portion of the technology that has been developed because of this program and have no idea of the daily impact on our lives. I truly believe that the space program may be the reason for the survival of our great country today. The technology from the space program has fueled our defensive systems ability to allow us to maintain an upper hand and to promote world safety from nuclear attack.
BTW I’m not just PROSOUTH… I’m PRO- AMERICA; I just like the southern part the best!
