I recently posted on here about diagnosing a speedometer problem, and we came to the conclusion that I needed to replace the speedometer cable I have since done that (it really needed it) after reinstalling the new cable now my speedometer has yet to work when I hook the end up that goes into the transmission to a drill and spin it to try and simulate the car running the speedometer just makes a loud noise and bounces a little bit not reading anything so I believe now I need a new speedometer after doing just a little bit of research. I’ve noticed that nowhere really sells new speedometers. So I’m wondering what do I do here? It seems that there’s some worth in rebuilding it is that something I could do myself? Is it something I should send out to somebody who is good at doing this? And who would that be? Or is it worth it to try and find a new speedometer on Facebook marketplace or somewhere else Off of an old donor car? or does anyone know the place where I can get one new? I’m just unsure what to do at this moment. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks y’all,

P.S if there is any grammatical or spelling mistakes that is because I am using Siri to write this sorry I am driving right now on my way to work, but I really wanna put this out there.
Try this before you purchase a new speedo. try to fish your hand up under the dash and disconnect the cable from the speedo. then try using your fingers to spin the speedo where the cable goes in counter clockwise and watch the needle to see if it's moving. if it does not move then there is probably something wrong with it. if it does move then it might be something other than the speedo itself. I have done this on my car in the past and my hand is big enough to palm a basketball but mine is a 71 your 79 may have a lot more junk behind the dash making this impossible.

Do I try and stick like a little screwdriver into the hole where the throttle cable goes in to spin it? Or can I just grab the entire peice and spin it?
I don’t believe you will have any luck getting your hand inside the dash and behind the speedometer. Most people test the speedometer by disconnecting the circular collar at the transmission. Use a drill motor attached to the inside cable, and run the drill in REVERSE, if the speedometer needle doesn’t move the you need to have the entire speedometer restored. I would also have the tach restored to, if your car has one that is operated by a cable. Since you failed to give the model year of your car, I am just guessing the tachometer is not electronic?

WAIT IN REVERSE Holy moly I’m special I did it in forward LOL so there may lie my issue I’ll give that a crack tomorrow. And I believe it’s electronic I have a 79 sorry I left that out.

On my 71 the piece the cable slides into is exposed enough that I can use my finger to spin it. you can use the cable at the trans end to test it however you need to make sure the cable is not broken and correctly engaged into the speedo.
