While waiting on a replacement power steering hose I thought I'd take the seat out and change the throttle cable out. The spit fire has been removed from my 82 and now has a Holley Street Warrior carburetor on it. The throttle cable was broken at the ears that mount to the firewall and the bracket so I ordered a 75-81 throttle cable and when I pulled the old one out it's about an inch shorter than the new one. There is no telling where Bubba dug that cable up from but it seems to fit a bit better between the firewall and the bracket. I assume throttle cables were similar for Chevy so anyone have a clue what a shorter one would be from?
Keep in mind the Holley throttle bracket mounts the cable further back than the quadrajet bracket. I shorten my cable by pulling off the ends then using a cut off wheel to shorten the cable housing. I then used bicycle brake cable clamp on the cable. Hint, a feeler gauge slipped between the firewall and cable end made releasing the upper tab easy. Did you know that the oil fill extension can be unscrewed from the valve cover.
Thanks for the info, I assumed I could remove the oil fill extension but have not tried to yet. Is the spring that returns the throttle to closed position a stock spring of some kind? The spring I have is a bit stiff...
I "think" I have the brake cable crimper in my bicycle tools box...
@Fly skids up! Thanks again, I found the spring at Auto Zone and got the ends off the throttle cable. Going to make sure I can replace one end or the other before I cut it. You have been a huge help in removing Bubba's work on my 82.
@Fly skids up! There is only single 1/4" hole in the carburetor arm so I can't try any others without drilling them out.
I decided to replace the carburetor end of the cable after shortening the outer cable. So I took a bit of steel and made a round end to fit into the cable cover and drilled a hole for the cable.
Next I finished up the rest of the cable end in the vertical machining center.
I used some thin CA glue on the end of the cable before cutting the old end off to stop the cable from coming apart. I installed the cable then adjusted the length and tightened the set screw. I also drilled a hole for the spring
The cable has a much better curve now... the only thing is the fitting does not "snap" into the firewall... maybe the 82 hole is a bit different than the 81 dunno.
And last but not least there's one more bit of Bubba I can remove from the car.
Now if I can get the power steering hoses back on and they don't leak I'm good to drive again.
